Whether you have attended church all your life or have never been at all, we know that it is not easy visiting a church for the first time. As you prepare to visit with us, we want to answer some questions you might have, so that you can have the best experience possible.
What kind of church is Downham Baptist Church?
We are a group of people who have believed in Jesus Christ for salvation and forgiveness of sins. We desire to follow the teachings of the Bible and to share the gospel and love of Christ with the world. We are an autonomous church holding historic Baptist principles. We believe in teaching the Bible verse by verse. We believe in worshipping God through music, singing a mixture of hymns and choruses. We strive to make everyone who attends or visits with us feel welcome and comfortable. You can find out more about what we believe here.
When are services?
What should I wear?
We strive to focus more on the heart than the outward appearance, so please come dressed as you want, whether it’s jeans and t-shirt, business casual, or suit and tie.
How do I get there?
We are located at 60 Churchdown which is between Downham Way and Shroffold Road. It is just around the corner from Downham Health Centre. For a map and directions, go here. The 336 Bus stops directly in front of our church (Ravenscar Road stop if going toward Locksbottom; Downham Health Centre stop if going toward Catford Bridge). The closest train stations are Grove Park Station and Bellingham Station. From Grove Park, take the 136 or 181 Bus to St Barnabas Hall Stop and walk up Churchdown from there. From Bellingham, take the 336 Bus toward Locksbottom, getting off at the Ravenscar Road Stop.
What about parking?
There is quite a bit of free on-street parking around the church, bearing in mind to respect our neighbours and residents. You should be able to find plenty of parking on any of the streets around the church.
What happens when I arrive?
As you arrive, you should see one of our greeters, who will answer any questions you might have. If you arrive a few minutes early, you will able to find your seat and meet some of our members before the service starts.
What is a service like?
During the services, we will do our best not to point you out or make you feel uncomfortable in any way. Each service lasts about an hour and includes a time of prayer, singing hymns and choruses, giving, Bible reaching, and Bible teaching. After the service, feel free to speak to one of our leaders if you have any questions about the teaching. You can listen to a sample of our Bible teaching here.
What about my children?
Children are welcome to attend all the services. During any of our services, crèche facilities are available for parents with children under 5 years of age to use if their children need it. Please don’t feel stressed about bringing your children. We have children as well, and we enjoying having them join us for the service.
Will I be asked to donate money when I visit?
We believe that giving is a responsibility and privilege for Christians, so, as part of our service, we will pass collection bags. You are welcome to give in the collection, but the collection is primarily for our members and regular attendees. Guests should not feel under any obligation to participate.
